Tasting note
Lush and generous Riesling with rounded tropical fruits given definition by tangy gooseberry and a breath of smoke and flint, with a fragrance of orange zest on the finish. The palate is dry and stony, with terrific intensity and finish.
Viticulture
The impressive Berg Schlossberg vineyard (meaning 'Castle Mountain') lies in the bend of the Rhine River, west of Rüdesheim. Steeper than anywhere else in Rheingau, the vine rows climb a 45% gradient from 120-160m above sea level. This vineyard gets plenty of sunshine, being south-facing and getting reflections from the river.
Vinification
After harvesting, the grapes were macerated for a short time (15-18 hours) before pressing. This step achieved very clear and highly aromatic juice, adding more intensity to the wine. Fermentation and maturation was mostly in large, old oak barrels (50-70 years old) for 19 months.
Food Match
The balance of freshness and richness give some exciting possibilities. Try it with grilled fish with exotic salads, or lightly roasted roasted beef with lemon garlic marinade.
